Village of monroe petition project

Michelle Hieronymi - Monroe Tea Party
On Friday, July 22, 2011, at 2 PM, the Village of Monroe Board of Trustees unanimously adopted a bond resolution of $1.7 million for the construction of a new Department of Public Works facility. Mayor James Purcell was also present.
No public forum or debate was held and few residents actually knew about the plan.
During his 2010 campaign, Mayor Purcell promised to keep spending at a minimum. He also pledged an open and transparent government.
Upon returning from vacation, I learned of the Board’s “back door” plans and began petitioning signatures to meet the 30-day requirement for challenging the resolution. Within a week, 165 qualified signatures were canvassed. This exceeded the amount needed to compel a “permissive referendum”, or public vote, on the costly proposal.
On Friday, August 19, 2011, history was made in the Village of Monroe.
The documents were delivered to the Village Hall and, for the first time, the electorate united to hold our local government officials accountable for the high taxes and bloated spending.
This situation did not happen overnight. It has slowly, over time, worsened because of voter apathy and complacency, of which we are all culpable.
According to NYS election law, the Village Board has 10 days to respond to the petition.
If accepted, a public vote will be held within the next 60 days. Updates will be posted to monroeteaparty.org.
My sincere thanks to all who helped make our voices heard.
