Bishops speak out against HHS mandate

Requesting prayer and action from the lay faithful, bishops nationwide continued to speak out against the Obama administration’s mandate that requires religious agencies to offer contraceptive and sterilization coverage to their employees.

“This decision is outrageous,” said Bishops Kevin Vann of Fort Worth and Kevin Farrell of Dallas. “It is an unprecedented and untenable abrogation of religious freedom in the United States.”

“This is part of a pattern in the United States that has degenerated from the recognition of religion as good and salutary to our society to religion being subjected to punitive discrimination.”

“We cannot—we will not—comply with this unjust law,” several bishops said in separate letters with nearly identical language.

“Our parents and grandparents did not come to these shores to help build America’s cities and towns, its infrastructure and institutions, its enterprise and culture, only to have their posterity stripped of their God given rights. In generations past, the Church has always been able to count on the faithful to stand up and protect her sacred rights and duties. I hope and trust she can count on this generation of Catholics to do the same.”
