Village of monroe, NY petition project - Your help is needed

In August 2011, I petitioned signatures from 165 Village of Monroe residents to compel a permissive referendum ( public vote) on a $1.7 million deficit spending project, quietly approved by the mayor and board of trustees.
(We pay a separate tax to the village, so this irresponsible borrowing would inevitably force our taxes to spike)
Unfortunately, the Board of Elections gave me town law not village law requirements relating to the percentage of signatures needed. Therefore, the amount obtained was insufficient to force a vote on the issue.
When I realized the legal number of signers should have been nearly 1000, I called my state representatives, Assemblywoman Annie Rabbitt and Senator Bill Larkin. I asked for their help to introduce legislation which would amend the state’s Village Law, Subdivision 1 of Section 9-902, thereby becoming commensurate with town law.
This revision will give the electorate, within the 576 villages of New York State, a greater ability to obtain a more reasonable number of signatures for a permissive referendum, hold local government accountable and have their voices heard in a fair and equitable manner.
I’m calling on all registered voters in New York to contact their state representatives in the Assembly (Bill No. A9095) and Senate (Bill No. SO6039) and ask them to please co-sponsor this legislation.

The hard work by Michelle, the founder of the Monroe Tea Party has paid off. Michelle's petition signatures were denied for the,“permissive referendum”. The petition requirement, as given to her by the Board of Elections, was misleading. So she took her case before her local Assemblywoman Annie Rabbitt and her local Senator William Larkin. With the information gathered by Michelle, her reps realized that a change to the law is needed. I congratulate Michelle for moving forward after this rejection. Michelle does not give up in this fight to bring fiscal responsibility back to our local government. Now we need your help. New York residents please contact your local assembly-person and senator and reference the bills enclosed in the post. Please asks your reps to support these bills. Thank you! ~ C4F
