Last Monday, a high school student in North Carolina engaged his social studies teacher in a heated debate about politics and the two leading presidential candidates. During the exchange, the teacher (an obvious Obama supporter) got very angry with the student and accused him of disrespecting the president. She even went so far as to tell the boy that he could be jailed for speaking ill of Obama.

KAYSVILLE — Vending machines in high schools are pretty standard these days. But two Utah schools have landed in trouble for violating federal school vending machine regulations. In fact, they've had to pay some hefty fines.

Utah Rep. Rob Bishop railed against his colleagues for passing a law two years ago that limits when students can use vending machines. On the House floor Wednesday, bishop called the law "silly" and said the federal government had no business passing it in the first place.

Could the Ten Commandments be reduced to six, a federal judge asked Monday.

Would that neutralize the religious overtones of a commandments display that has the Giles County School Board in legal hot water?

That unorthodox suggestion was made by Judge Michael Urbanski during oral arguments over whether the display amounts to a governmental endorsement of religion, as alleged in a lawsuit filed by a student at Narrows High School.

At least one high school student is about to turn in a red hot paper. Apparently, a Los Angeles area high school has assigned its students to write a paper in History Class dealing with “art or justice.“ One student picked the topic ”Racism in the Mainstream Media.” Yet unlike so many other students, who would have probably gone to radical or Left-wing commentators to point out just how many ways the Media isn’t fearful enough of racism, this student decided to call the last person most educators would expect: Rush Limbaugh.

A proposal from the Obama administration to prevent children from doing farm chores has drawn plenty of criticism from rural-district members of Congress. But now it’s attracting barbs from farm kids themselves.

SOUTH BEND, Indiana, April 23, 2012 (LifeSiteNews.com) - After an IRS complaint from an secularist group and other criticism, Peoria Bishop Daniel Jenky is now facing a petition by Notre Dame faculty to have him removed from the Catholic university’s board of fellows.

Boy are Americans this stupid to believe anything associated with the hoodlum in white house anymore? Over the past few years, Arizona has become a hotbed of domestic controversy. The ongoing debate over the state’s immigration policies will now be joined by an equally-controversial decision: The inclusion of Bible classes in public school curriculum.

Back in January, The Blaze first told you about Arizona’s consideration of a bill that would ensure that the Bible found its way into public and charter schools. Rather than using proselytizing as the basis for the law, proponents have argued that the Bible’s historical significance warrants its study in the classroom. Well, it seems these individuals have won the debate — at least for the time being.

A student mural at Pilgrim High School in Warwick, Rhode Island, was reportedly deemed inappropriate and banned by a public high school due to its depiction of a man, woman and child holding hands. The couple, clearly engaged in a straight, monogamous relationship, are seen standing with what appears to be their child.

Was there something else more sinister presented in the painting, you ask — an offensive message or an inappropriate character attribute? According to news reports, the school painted over this portion of the mural out of fear that it would offend people who live alternative lifestyles.

In Buffalo, New York, the heart of the American rust-belt, the public school system pays for its teachers to get plastic surgery. Hair removal. Miscrodermabrasian. Liposuction. If you can name the procedure, it's probably covered.

No, I am not exaggerating. And no, this article is not an excuse to make "Hot For Teacher" cracks. When I write that Buffalo's school system pays, I mean it literally. The perk is included as a self-insured rider in its teachers' contract. Therefore, the district has to cover the cost of each nip and tuck itself. There's no co-pay, so the school district ends up footing the entire bill. It estimates the current annual cost at $5.2 million, down from $9 million in 2009.

Take Karl Marx, for instance. We all know of his writings pitting the proletariat against the bourgeoisie, out to prove that the fight between the two was all part of some cosmic dialectic.

Yet the route Marx advocates to usher in the nirvana supposedly reached through the eradication of private property was to destroy the family, taking it apart root and branch. “Abolition of the family! Some Muslims are getting smart. They’ve learned some lessons from the Communists, especially Antonio Gramsci (1891–1937). Gramsci broke from the revolutionary methods of the early Marxists. Today’s smarter Muslims don’t want to blow up stuff. Like the Gramsci Communists before them, they are working to take over our culture from the inside by using our laws against us. No shot needs to be fired. No building needs to be blown up. They are going after the foundational institutions: schools, media, politics, and the courts. Crucifixes? At a Catholic university? How about that.

Of course, at the heart of this complaint is the hope of establishing a Muslim prayer space on the campus that would be subject to different standards than the rest of the university -- a little enclave of Islamic law where its ban on the display of crosses would be "respected."

It is mentioned below that Muslim students say they like CUA because they feel "safe" and "comfortable." They are receiving the benefits of what Catholics have built at CUA, but are expecting more. They want to bend the institution to their own purposes for their own "comfort."

They think it's a fine place, if it just weren't so, you know, Catholic, and therefore un-Islamic. "University Accused of Discriminating Against Muslims," from CUA's The Tower, October 20 (thanks to B.):

A New Jersey teacher is under investigation for anti-gay remarks she allegedly posted on her Facebook that criticize a lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender history month display at her school.

Viki Knox, a 49-year-old special education teacher at Union High School and adviser to the school's student prayer group, reportedly posted on Facebook that homosexuality is "a perverted spirit that has existed from the beginning of creation," and a "sin" that "breeds like cancer," the Star-Ledger reports.

The videos below of Frances Fox Piven are painful — for many reasons.

First, the message is frustrating. They show Piven calling for a “popular uprising” and calling Wall St. bankers “thieves,“ ”cannibals,“ and the ”big problem.”

Second, the way it is delivered might be compared to fingernails on the chalkboard. See, it’s become popular for the Occupy Wall St. protesters to mimic and repeat everything their speakers say. Think of it like that annoying game of “shadow” you and your friends used to play as kids. And Piven never seems to get the entire grasp of it, or at least isn’t that great at playing along.

In January, Ohioan Kelley Williams-Bolar was sentenced to 10 days in jail, three years of probation, and 80 hours of community service for having her children attend schools outside her district. Gov. John Kasich reduced her sentence last month.

Ms. Williams-Bolar caught a break last month when Ohio Gov. John Kasich granted her clemency, reducing her charges to misdemeanors from felonies. His decision allows her to pursue her teacher's license, and it may provide hope to parents beyond the Buckeye State. In the last year, parents in Connecticut, Kentucky and Missouri have all been arrested—and await sentencing—for enrolling their children in better public schools outside of their districts.

A long-anticipated decision has finally been handed down by the Fifth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in the infamous "candy cane" case.

The court ruled yesterday that the Plano (Texas) Independent School District violated the Constitution by not allowing student Jonathan Morgan to hand out candy cane pens with a religious message at his class "winter" party nine years ago. According to the ruling, a little girl who was threatened for handing out tickets to a religious play, as well as an entire class of children who were forbidden from writing "Merry Christmas" on holiday cards to American troops overseas, also suffered discrimination.

When someone sneezes, a common response is, “God bless you.” But one California teacher finds this statement so offensive and disruptive that he’s working to cut back on its usage in the classroom.

Steve Cuckovich, a health teacher at William C. Wood High School in Vacaville, California, has attempted to banish the friendly gesture, as he believes it is both disrespectful and disruptive. To punish students who do, indeed, say “God bless you” after one of their classmates sneezes, he purportedly knocks 25 points off of their grade.

U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio, whom every presidential candidate would love to have as a running mate, sounds a lot like a Rick Perry supporter when it comes to the issue of tuition help for immigrants who grew up in the United States long after they were brought here illegally.

The issue flared up at the last presidential debate when Perry defended a bill he signed in Texas that gave in-state tuition rates to some illegal immigrants who graduated from Texas high schools. Perry was booed by the tea-party crowd.

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) -- Texas Gov. Rick Perry is defending his record on immigration during a Republican debate, saying people who don't support education benefits for the children of illegal immigrants are heartless.

Perry has faced criticism from his Republican rivals on immigration since entering the presidential campaign in August. He says Texas has spent millions to secure its border with Mexico, and he supported Arizona's tough immigration law.

Since her extraordinary upbeat VP nominee acceptance speech in 2008, I have wondered. What did Palin specifically say to prompt such immediate visceral hatred from the left? I have come to realize the answer is her celebration of God, family and country.

The Obama administration is busy expanding the exact type of vicious, ungrateful underclass which recently exploded in London.  An administration program will expand free school meal coverage to millions of young people who are not even supposed to be eligible.

A stated goal of the program is to eliminate the stigma of getting a free lunch.  But that stigma is one of the only things separating dignified free people from wretched government dependants.  There is a lot of gray in between, but the Obama program would take students from a young age and nudge them in the wrong direction.

And the rocket's red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there.

NEW CITY — The Clarkstown Board of Education unanimously voted to keep a controversial novel in the high school English curriculum, ending weeks of furious debate among community members.

Fellow patriots intervene to stop the reading of this perverted book.  The daily assault by these radicals who want to steal their innocence. I don't care if these are HS students there is no reason for them to read about every social ill. We should be boosting their confidence with uplifting books not filling their heads with trash and depressing images. This is why we have some young people thinking of suicide.

The statement that stands out most to me in this article is:

Rhea Vogel, Clarkstown North PTA president, cautioned the board.

"We are going down a very slippery slope when we let a small group of people decide what our children can read," she said. "I caution our board not to give in to minority pressure."

Wait just a minute!  Isn't this small group of people the parents of these children?  Again being over ruled by the all knowing school administration.

Apparently civility and free speech only apply to one side at Columbia University - the anti-military side. Woe be unto you if you have the temerity to stand up in an open forum as a member of the Columbia University community and voice an opinion in opposition to that which is prevalent there.

A wounded Iraq war veteran found that out recently as he stood up - something he had to learn to do again after his wounds - and gave what the NY Post describes as an "impassioned challenge to fellow students on their perceptions of the military." It occurred during the second of three meetings the University has scheduled to talk about ROTC and the possibility of bringing it back on campus.

Hero's unwelcome

Wounded Iraq vet jeered at Columbia

The New York Post

Columbia University students heckled a war hero during a town-hall meeting on whether ROTC should be allowed back on campus.

"Racist!" some students yelled at Anthony Maschek, a Columbia freshman and former Army staff sergeant awarded the Purple Heart after being shot 11 times in a firefight in northern Iraq in February 2008. Others hissed and booed the veteran.

Maschek, 28, had bravely stepped up to the mike Tuesday at the meeting to issue an impassioned challenge to fellow students on their perceptions of the military.

"It doesn't matter how you feel about the war. It doesn't matter how you feel about fighting," said Maschek. "There are bad men out there plotting to kill you."

GRAY, Tenn., January 4, 2011 (LifeSiteNews.com) - As the modern-day homeschool movement confidently marches forward into its fourth decade, colleges and universities are opening wide their doors to welcome its mature, prepared graduates to their ranks. Homeschoolers score an average of 37 percentile points above the national average on standardized achievement tests and typically score above average on the SAT and ACT, statistics that apparently have caught the eye of college admissions personnel. Since 1999, the number of homeschoolers in the United States has increased by 74%, and today thousands of young men and women are graduating from high school—at home.

he appeal of animated cartoons can be long-lasting.  I grew up in the 1960s, when the era of TV cartoon series was at its height. Until the 1950s, cartoon shorts by Disney and Warner Bros., such as Merry Melodies, Looney Tunes, Silly Symphonies, as well as Tex Avery shorts, had been designed for movie theatres, run before a main presentation. Those were added to kids’ TV schedules but cartoons were soon tailor-made for the medium of TV. William Hanna and Josef Barbera produced their own shows – with characters such as Huckleberry Hound or Yogi Bear voiced by Daws Butler. Countless other cartoon characters chased each other across the small screen, the most memorable being voiced by Mel Blanc. Cartoons were an integral part of growing up for kids around the globe.

There’s been an ongoing budget crisis in Los Angeles this year. Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa was at one point threatening to shut city services down two days a week to make ends meet. Despite this, it does not appear that the city has been cutting back:

Next month’s opening of the Robert F. Kennedy Community Schools will be auspicious for a reason other than its both storied and infamous history as the former Ambassador Hotel, where the Democratic presidential contender was assassinated in 1968. With an eye-popping price tag of $578 million, it will mark the inauguration of the nation’s most expensive public school ever.

Thirty-one Republican senators have agreed to oppose the United Nations' "Convention on the Rights of the Child" treaty, and critics of the international plan to vest children with a long list of rights – such as a right to seek government review of parental decisions – are looking for three more names.

The campaign by supporters of ParentalRights.org opposes an effort to put the U.N. advocacy plan into operation in the United States.

Thank God for these 31 sensible republicans.  Let's pray they get the 3 more needed to oppose the UN treaty.  Get the UN out of the affairs of the American family.  They don't want the rights of the child; they want to take away all the rights of the American parents to raise their children in accord with their beliefs.   The treaty for the rights of the child is a diabolical treaty.   ~ C4F

Given the current actions by the administration in Washington, I thought it would be a good idea to go back to basics.

Actually, given the actions of most administrations in our history, it would be a good idea.

Reading material online about the difference between a republic and democracy, I’ve come to the conclusion that many people are frustrated lawyers; i.e., they don’t have a degree, but they revel in nitpicking arguments about word definitions.

Definitions are important, but parsing, slicing, chopping—to the exclusion of basic principles—is a waste of time.

So here are the basics.

To close out 2009, the Democrats, who supposedly care so much about ‘the children,’ gave the DC children a special gift–they killed the successful voucher program–effectively banishing them back to horrid DC public schools.  As I reported on New Year’s Eve 2009:

The Democrats aren't for the children.  They are out to control all children and the take away parental rights.  ~ C4F

Yesterday, President Obama delivered a major speech on education in an effort to garner support for his Race to the Top grant program and his push for national education standards and tests. The President’s remarks came on the heels of a speech delivered by Education Secretary Arne Duncan on Tuesday at the National Press Club, during which Duncan attempted to paint the Administration’s policies as part of a “quiet revolution.”

WASHINGTON – They are the voiceless victims whose horror in many ways mirrors what children in concentration-camp "experiments" suffered during the Holocaust. But the mastermind behind such horrid crimes of sexual abuse and rape of children – some as young as two months old – touts a legacy that's lauded, lionized, bankrolled and celebrated in literature, science, industry and the arts.

Come join other transgender, gender bending, gender nonconforming teens, children and families for three days of celebrating individuality, making new friends, and having fun. Meet other trans and gender nonconforming teens and adults, hang out, and explore different topics on gender: school, making friends, dating.

Obama has already appointed transexuals to high positions. And then there's Elena Kagan, about to become a SCOTUS. While she presents as unassuming, at Harvard, she was a firebrand.

Every year about this time, big-government liberals stand up in front of college commencement crowds across the country and urge the graduates to do the noblest thing possible-- become big-government liberals.

That isn't how they phrase it, of course. Commencement speakers express great reverence for "public service," as distinguished from narrow private "greed." There is usually not the slightest sign of embarrassment at this self-serving celebration of the kinds of careers they have chosen-- over and above the careers of others who merely provide us with the food we eat, the homes we live in, the clothes we wear and the medical care that saves our health and our lives.

Governor Christie is inviting voters to consider a definition of “fairness” very different from President Obama’s.

At a New Jersey town meeting, Gov. Chris Christie, the newest YouTube star for the limited-government set, was reproached by an unhappy teacher. The governor, facing a budget shortfall of $11 billion, has proposed, among other economies, a one-year salary freeze for New Jersey teachers. Her voice raised in anger (that’s a normal speaking voice in my home state), Rita Wilson protested that she should be paid $83,000, the only reasonable compensation in light of her “education and experience.” Christie’s reply got an ovation: “Well, you know what? Then you don’t have to do it.”

If you’re a parent, you are probably too busy doing the day-to-day work of raising your children to worry about an international treaty that could actually undermine your authority over them.

But if you’ve ever insisted that your teenager drag himself out of bed on a Sunday morning to attend church with the family, or required him to find a part-time job to pay for the increase in your car insurance, or — heaven forbid — if you’ve ever spanked a young child for an act of willful disobedience, there are folks who would like to override your parental judgment.

Folks like President Obama, in fact.

When voters reject a school district's proposed budget, state law allows the district to operate under a "contingency" budget of its previous budget plus 120 percent of the prior year's inflation rate. But last year's CPI was slightly negative -- so voters can actually lower their school-property-tax bills by nixing the budget.

That is, a "no" vote could actually mean something.

More than 22,620 Texas secondary students who stopped showing up for class in 2008 were excluded from the state's dropout statistics because administrators said they were being home-schooled, according to Texas Education Agency figures.

But that's where the scrutiny of this growing population seems to end, leaving some experts convinced that schools are disguising thousands of middle and high school dropouts in this hands-off category.

While home-schooling's popularity has increased, the rate of growth concentrated in Texas' high school population is off the chart: It's nearly tripled in the last decade, including a 24 percent jump in a single year.

“That's just ridiculous,” said Brian D. Ray, founder of the National Home Education Research Institute. “It doesn't sound very believable.”
